Juan Novo headjoint #501 - grenadilla

Juan Novo was born in Habana, Cuba. While attending a concert with his family when he was five years old, little Juan got up, ran up to the conductor, and began waving his arms up and down, conducting right along with him, as the orchestra played on to the thunderous applause of the crowd. By the time he was 18, Juan was making a living as a professional musician in San Francisco under contract with Warner Brothers. After graduating from a two-year course in band instrument repair at Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane Washington, Juan moved to Miami Florida and eventually opened his own repair shop catering to the repair needs of the students and professionals in Miami. Juan began making professional custom wooden headjoints in April of 1983 to satisfy the demanding needs of a client and four years later received a patent for inventing the illuminated transparent Fantasia Flute. This beautifully handmade Cooper scale flute, which was machined from a solid piece of industrial grade crystal clear cast acrylic rod and then fitted with 24-karat gold plated keys, can be illuminated through a special fiber-optic light system whose color of light changes depending on the note being played. This instrument, originally commissioned by the late Julius Baker in 1984, was purchased by New York Jazz flautist Dave Valentin and is featured in one of his albums entitled: “LIGHT STRUCK,” recorded at GRP Records in 1986. Mr. Novo was the first American flute maker to introduce an American made professional model ultra-thin wooden headjoint to the world market at the NFA convention in 1984. His unique ultra-thin design with a lip plate and two simple end bands, which is now imitated by other makers worldwide, has completely revolutionized the flute playing world. His headjoints are considered by many leading flautists, both Jazz and Classical, to be among the best in the world.
