New Altus Flutes

Known as "Speedy" to his friends, Mr. Shuichi Tanaka, the founder of Altus flutes is a man of many talents. He is an artist, musician, engineer, businessman, and most notably a master flute maker. In 1977, Mr. Tanaka met British flutist William Bennett. The two men had much in common including their respect and admiration for the vintage flutes of Louis Lot. With Bennentt's influence and the inspiration of the finest vintage flutes, Mr. Tanaka designed an innovative modern flute rich in expressive tone colors, with ample capacity for resonance, accurate intonation, and mechanical strength. This was the first Altus flute, built in 1981. Speedy Tanaka and William Bennett shared an admiration for Albert Cooper's vision of updating and modernizing the traditional flute scale, creating the Altus-Bennett scale - a new standard for flute design. The Altus-Bennett scale was carefully designed to provide effortless intonation, impeccably tuned harmonics, and exceptionally balanced registers.

Altus leads the way in providing an unprecedented array of tubing and material choices for the needs of discerning flutists. By combining old world craftsmanship with modern alloys and tubing construction, an incredible range of flutes can be tailored to the specific needs of any flutist. Altus provides the most unique variety of flute tubing and materials in the world today.

Altus Flutes currently offers three different headjoint styles: The "Classic Cut," the "Z-Cut," and the "V-Cut."

Renowned for producing the trademark Altus sound, the Classic Cut headjoint provides vibrant warmth with excellent projection. Its pure tonal center allows the artist great flexibility with an infinite color palette.

With a more rectangular embouchure hole with minimal over and undercutting, the Z-Cut headjoint produces a quick response without sacrificing flexibility or control. The sound is open and free with a darker tonal color.

Altus has created one of its most powerful headjoints, the V-Cut, capable of producing an exceptional tonal depth without sacrificing flexibility. Featuring a high front wall and steep angled lip plate, this headjoint performs at the cutting edge of modern headjoint design.

New Brannen Brothers Flutes

Since Brannen Brothers was founded in 1978, they have earned a worldwide reputation for unsurpassed excellence. There is no doubt about their place in the market; discerning flutists have placed them squarely at the top. All Brannen Brothers flutes feature soldered tone holes, and are fully customizable to your specifications. Recently, Brannen launched a partnership with the famous French headjoint maker JR Lafin. These world-class headjoints are now available for purchase separately, or on any Brannen Brothers Flute. All Brannen Brothers flutes use the scale developed by their Vice-President Emeritus, Albert Cooper. The Brögger Flute, their most well-known, popular instrument, combines the traditional fingerings of the Boehm system with the enormous advantages of the Brögger Mekanik™, developed by Danish flute-maker Johan Brögger. This mechanism increases the reliability of the key work and reduces internal friction, allowing keys to be adjusted much more closely to individual preferences.

Brannen Brothers also produces two unique lines of flutes: The "Orchestral Model" flute and the "Kingma System" flute. The "Orchestral Model," designed by Albert Cooper, improves intonation and response in the third register both by altering the size and placement of several left hand tone holes and incorporating a half-closing thumb mechanism. Available in sterling silver, 10K gold, or 14K gold, the Orchestral Model comes with C# trill key and split E mechanism standard, and features a closed hole (Plateau) left hand with an open hole (French) right hand. A collaboration between Bickford Brannen and famous Dutch Flute-maker Eva Kingma, the "Kingma System" flute is the first C flute to offer a complete quarter-tone scale and fully chromatic multi-phonic venting while still maintaining the ability to play traditional flute repertoire. Because of the increased venting ability, the Kingma System flute offers superb pitch control. All Kingma System flutes use a traditional Brannen pinned mechanism and are available in sterling silver, 10K gold, or 14K gold.

Brannen Brothers Flutes currently offers four headjoint styles: The "Modern Cooper," the "Modified Cooper," the "Epoch" and the "JR Lafin" style.

The Epoch Cut (formerly the 700) is the most projecting, responsive style ever, the Epoch is less resistance than the other Brannen-Cooper Headjoint styles.

The Modern Cooper Cut is projecting and responsive; it's Brannen's interpretation of Albert Cooper’s popular design, and it has the flexibility to cover a wide range of tone colors.

Flexible yet stable, the Modified Cooper Cut produces a rich, full sound with slightly more resistance than the Modern Cooper.

New Burkart Flutes

Lillian Burkart is simply one of the most gifted piccolo and flute makers of all time. She began her career at the Powell factory, where she made bodies, keys, piccolos, and also padded instruments. She founded her own company in 1982 with her husband Jim Phelan, whose unsurpassed knowledge of instrument design and execution built a team that can't be beat. During the 1980s, Lillian also made headjoints for Powell, and her expertise and reputation for spectacular headjoints created the demand for flutes designed and built under her own name. In 1996, with the help of her husband's engineering expertise, the Lillian Burkart flute was born. Since then, Burkart flutes have been at the cutting edge of flute-making innovation. Burkart flutes are known for their resonance, easy control, and extremes in tonal color and dynamic range. Each key of a Burkart flute or piccolo is designed to be an extension of the human body. The curves, angles, heights, and reactions of the touch pieces maximize technique and minimize fatigue. Burkart flutes enable the flutist to push the performance envelope by giving full voice and limitless technical possibilities to the instrument. Every Burkart flute, piccolo and headjoint truly embodies the motto "The Sound and Feel of Great Design."

Burkart's Micro-Link™ Mechanism, first introduced in 2007, is an improvement upon all previous pinless mechanisms, this innovative architecture provides stability with two solid 14K white gold rods, reduces weight, and allows the transfer of motion to be very close to the main axle of the keys. By design, the keys are easy to remove for maintenance and adjustments. The simple elegance of Burkart's micro-Link™ mechanism results in equally light spring tension throughout, stable and balanced response for both the right and left hands, and lightning-fast action. Burkart's Micro-Link Mechanism is standard on all Professional and Elite flutes.

The player will experience evenness in all three octaves, and effortless articulation. The stability and ease of play allow for nuances within a wide pallet of color creating a sound full of brilliant richness and depth.

The M2 Cut is Lillian Burkart’s most innovative. The air stream is quickly excited and the player achieves exceptional response and projection. The embouchure shape focuses the tone, resulting in an energetic and direct sound. This style provides a distinctive resonating core throughout all three registers of the flute. New Burkart Piccolos

Lillian Burkart is simply one of the most gifted piccolo (and flute) makers of all time. She began her career at the Powell factory, where she made bodies, keys, piccolos, and also padded instruments. She founded her own company in 1982 with her husband Jim Phelan, whose unsurpassed knowledge of instrument design and execution built a team that can't be beat. Lillian Burkart has spent decades researching and refining the piccolo, becoming one of the foremost experts on the instrument. The original Burkart piccolo was initially subcontracted to Powell, and for nine years, all Powell piccolos sold were manufactured by Lillian. By 1990, the Lillian Burkart (now the Elite model) was introduced, and there has been no better piccolo on the market since.

The widely acclaimed Burkart piccolo sets industry standards and is played in many of the world's top orchestras. In concert with James Phelan, Ms. Burkart continues to apply precise and technically advanced methods to the crafting of piccolos. New Emanuel Headjoints

A  maverick in flute-making, Emanuel has been building instruments for 30 years. Today’s Emanuel Flutes and headjoints are played by some of the world’s greatest flutists.

Artistry is what makes Emanuel Flutes so special. They merge the highest flights of elegant beauty and invention with the awareness that a flute or a headjoint have an artistic value, helping each Flute Artist to discover his/her unique voice, which is never plain or dull. These instruments intended to make practice easier and performance more beautiful.

The innovative urge driving Emanuel Flutes is so burning and authentic, it translates right away into a new form of classicism in the flute making mastery. It happens because innovation at Emanuel Flutes is based on human skills and progressive creativity, not on innovation for innovation’s sake. In times of trends that last the span of a digital post, nothing is more modern and fascinating than the utter classicism that matches form and function, adding liberal doses of invention.

It is both a craftsmanship quality and unique sound characteristics that draw your attention. You know it is there when you see the Emanuel Flute and try it.

A self-taught flute-maker, Emanuel has been building instruments for 30 years. Today’s Emanuel Flutes and headjoints are the product of his singular commitment to the art and craft of flute-making. They’re slow art for a fast world. Emanuel flutes compete with the finest flutes on the market, and they are played by some of the world's greatest flutists.

Born in Lima Peru, Emanuel developed an interest in manual arts, music, and fine craftsmanship during his high-school years in that city. His first foray into the world of flutes was a business he entered into with his father, Miguel Arista, Sr. On the request of the family’s older brother, Miguel Arista, Jr., they built a prototype flute case with indigenous materials and soon began production of French-style flute cases in Peru, the majority of which were sold to Boston-based flute companies.

Three years later, Emanuel immigrated to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to manufacture the cases locally. In 1978 the first Arista Flute was shown at the NFA Convention in Washington, D.C. British flutist and flute-maker, William Bennett, collaborated with the Aristas to introduce a new Bennett scale, considered by many to be an improved version of the Cooper scale, the scale used on all Arista Flutes beginning with No. 2. Emanuel’s work with the Arista company stretched over eight years and 175 instruments and included the construction of flute-making tools, flute bodies, and parts such as posts, keys, and crowns.

Encouraged by mentors Emerson DeFord, Jack Moore, Edward Almeida and Dick Jerome, he introduced Emanuel Flute #1 in 1991 at the National Flute Association’s convention in Washington, D.C. At his first convention, he sold his first two flutes and was commissioned to make Emanuel Flute #3 for Gian-Luca Petrucci of Rome. This led to an introduction to flutist Stefano Cioffi, President of the Italian Flute Academy, and an invitation to exhibit at the first annual International Flute Festival in Italy later that year. In Saluzzo, Italy, Emanuel presented his flute to international greats such as Maxence Larrieu, Giuseppe Nova, András Adorján, and Alain Marion. In a successful finish to the company’s first year, Emanuel Flute #4 was purchased by Maxence Larrieu.

Today, there is no more respected brand than Emanuel - true connoisseurs of fine flutes place his flutes squarely on top, both in terms of craftsmanship and sound.

New Gemeinhardt Flutes

The Gemeinhardt story begins with Kurt Gemeinhardt, a fourth generation flute maker. He was born in Markneukirchen, Germany, a region with two centuries of instrument making tradition, and served an apprenticeship under his father. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Kurt left Germany to work his trade in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he crafted handmade flutes for the world's most prestigious musicians. While in Switzerland his fame as the foremost creator of quality hand-crafted musical instruments spread worldwide. In 1928, Kurt Gemeinhardt was persuaded to travel to America to create instruments in Elkhart, Indiana. After twenty years of developing flutes for others, Kurt opened his own manufacturing plant, The Gemeinhardt Company, where every instrument since has been engraved with the Gemeinhardt name. Initially, Kurt's vision was to produce a limited quantity of professional all-silver flutes, but demand for his unique flutes increased beyond his expectations. The original 20- by 40-foot Gemeinhardt factory was replaced in 1951 with a new plant, designed by Kurt himself, to meet new manufacturing needs. By this time the Gemeinhardt line expanded to include mid-priced flutes, soon followed by the introduction of entry-level flutes. Gemeinhardt's newest expansion occurred in September 1997 with the acquisition of Roy Seaman Piccolo Company. Roy Seaman manufactures handcrafted, grenadilla wood piccolos. This legendary name is known worldwide for professional quality instruments.

Through growth and product demand, Gemeinhardt emerged as the music industry's largest exclusive manufacturer of flutes and piccolos. Today, Gemeinhardt Co., Inc. manufactures flutes and piccolos for all levels of musicians, ranging from student to professional. With the advancement of technology, sophisticated machinery enables a level of precision and consistency that was once uncontrollable. But, it is the human touch that properly fits and regulates each flute to reach optimum sound quality and harmonization. Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments globally manufactures our instruments, utilizing the talent, expertise, and efficiencies of our factories in the U.S., Taiwan, and China. For example, many of the key components are produced in all three countries, the C flute head joints and all piccolos are made in the U.S. and final assembly is done in Taiwan and China to meticulous standards. As the Gemeinhardt family did for four generations, the artisans at Gemeinhardt share their expertise, passing on the time honored art of musical instrument making from generation to generation, taking great pride in placing the Gemeinhardt name on every instrument.

New Gemeinhardt Piccolo

All Gemeinhardt piccolos are made entirely in the United States. As the Gemeinhardt family did for four generations, the artisans at Gemeinhardt share their expertise, passing on the time honored art of musical instrument making from generation to generation, taking great pride in placing the Gemeinhardt name on every instrument.

New Hammig Piccolos

The Hammig family legacy of crafting woodwind instruments began around 1780, passing through eight generations and nearly 230 years. During the period between 1906 to 1920, Philipp Hammig developed his skills to a high level and eventually built instruments under his own name. During this period, he started learning the profession in his father’s workshop, then went on to Berlin to the firm Rittershausen to study specialized flute making. In 1959, Philipp Hammig’s son, Gerhard took over the family business; however, the flutes and piccolos remained in the name of "Philipp Hammig," as they are known today, after Gerhard handed over the business to his four children in 1994.

Hammig piccolos are sought after all over the world due to the character found in their sweet, dark sound; a response found in such aged wood. All Hammig Piccolos are tuned to A=442, feature Straubinger pads, and include a split E mechanism (standard). The 650/3 and 650/4 models also include a G# (half-closing thumb) mechanism (standard).

New Haynes Flutes

The William S. Haynes story is one of a passion for perfection; the genesis of all flutemaking in America. With care and caution, William Sherman Haynes and his brother George Haynes fashioned the first Haynes flute, a copy of a Boehm-Mendler, at the request of a member of the Boston Symphony in 1888. Around this time, George Haynes also invented the "drawn tone hole" on an alto flute, revolutionizing the flute making process forever. The first publicly available Haynes flute was number 507, so lessons learned in crafting over five hundred prototypes helped him shape a set of principles that set the benchmark for modern flute creation. Around 1920, Haynes Flutes partnered with Georges Barrere, principal flutist of the New York Symphony, to create the American version of the French model flute - an open hole, soldered tone hole flute, and in 1935, Haynes built Barrere the very first American flute made of Platinum, #14,000. Through the years, Haynes has been the choice of legendary players including William Kincaid, Georges Laurent, John Wummer, and Jean-Pierre Rampal (Haynes #29333, 14K gold) to name a few. Mr. Haynes built a workforce of craftspeople who to this day share his ideals of craftsmanship and ardor for the art. Mr. Haynes' passion for perfection still resonates in every flute created today. When you play a Haynes flute, you know that you are playing a flute with more than 125 years of history, a flute of uncompromising standards.

At Haynes, we want to know your sound, the feel of your technical artistry, and the special features that make your flute complete. Every flute can be completely customized - from tubing material, mechanism, options, and engravings. Discover why today's greatest artists - from James Galway and Emmanuel Pahud to Jeanne Baxtresser and Amy Porter - play on a Haynes Flute!

Haynes Flutes currently offers two headjoint styles: The "Piedmont Cut" and the "Nagog Cut."

The Piedmont Cut is the quintessential Haynes headjoint - warm, rich and flexible - and is the default headjoint for all Haynes flutes.

The Nagog Cut, named after the Nagog Creek on which the new Haynes factory is situated, features a thicker riser, adding more resistance and color to the sound without sacrificing articulation.

New Howell Roberts Headjoints

Howel Roberts was born in Liverpool, England, and started his apprenticeship in flute-making in 1974 at the Flute-makers Guild in London. He was taught by Harry Seeley, a renowned flute-maker and former worker at the Rudall Carte flute-making company. At the 'Guild' he built piccolos, alto flutes, and concert flutes in sterling silver and 14K gold. It was here that he was also introduced to the woods used in flute-making - wooden flutes being a substantial part of the Guild's output. After 5 years, Roberts left London and moved to Germany where he started making flutes at the workshop of Max Hieber, Munich. In 1994, after 20 years of making flutes for other companies, Howel decided to start his own company, making instruments to his own style and standard. In the early years at the Flute-makers Guild in London, Roberts had always been fascinated by the wooden flutes and their tonal quality. This fascination accompanied him throughout his flute-making career. He had started to buy and season various woods in 1980 and it was this wood that became invaluable in later years when he started my own company specializing in wooden flutes and headjoints. Howel Roberts produces the finest wooden headjoints available anywhere. The thin wall head joints have a raised lip-plate which is carved out of the wood. An inlay along the lip-plate can be requested with the Grenadilla heads, creating a contrast to the dark wood. The thick wall head joints, being a larger size, possess completely different tonal qualities and are somewhat darker in sound. Both the thin and the thick wall head joints respond and project extremely well. The wood used for the Howel Roberts wooden flute is seasoned African Blackwood (Grenadilla), with Cocuswood and Cocobolo available on request.

New J. R. Lafin Headjoints

Rainer Lafin, born in 1940, studied with many prominent flutists, including Dr. Demmler and Aurele Nicolet, and began his career in the Orchestral realm. His last professional engagement was principal piccoloist with the Berlin Radio-Symphony-Orchestra, and was a regular substitute with the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1979, Mr. Lafin moved to Japan where he trained extensively at the Muramatsu factory. He began working with Albert Cooper, the best flute and headjoint maker of the day, to create a better headjoint. Continually experimenting with newer and better headjoint designs, the actual design of J. R. Lafin headjoints are constantly changing in an ongoing effort to make flutes play even better. In May 2008, Mr. Lafin signed an agreement with Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, who are now the exclusive makers of Lafin headjoints for all of North America.

J. R. Lafin headjoints are outstanding for their extended dynamic range in all registers and for a wide range of tone colors. There is one single "style," but there are a number of tubing options and all headjoints can be made with or without Adler-style wings.

New Juan Arista Headjoints

Over thirty years ago the Arista family established a small flutemaking workshop in Boston, Massachusetts. In time, the brothers entered into the craft, each having mastered all aspects of mechanical fabrication and aesthetic detail. Flute virtuoso William Bennett and his friends Adrian Brett, Richard and Chris Taylor introduced critical refinements to the Arista instrument that make this flute unsurpassed in craftsmanship and tonal quality. It is an instrument that, in the words of Mr. Bennett, embodies "That mysterious something that only a few old french flutes have."

Arista headjoints are played by well known soloists, teachers and flute players in major orchestras all around the world for over twenty-five years and are available in silver, 14k rose gold or grenadilla wood. There are few headjoints made nowadays which can equal, both in strength and beauty, the Arista headjoints.

The L2 -style is the perfect combination of strength, beauty and multitude of colors in one headjoint. Preferred by many leading British flute players.

The Tally Style is a beautiful sweet sound with a quick response and clean articulation. A traditional French sound with a modern touch.

New Miyazawa Flutes

Miyazawa Flutes was founded in 1969 by Master Flute-maker Misashi Miyazawa.  Mr. Miyazawa built his company on the belief that every flute is a fusion of time-tested traditional techniques and groundbreaking advancements, handcrafted to meet your highest expectations. Miyazawa's consistent quality is matched by a commitment to choice. Your instrument will be customized to match your playing style. You'll find quality in every aspect of a Miyazawa flute including these notable advancements: In the mid 1970s, Mr. Miyazawa joined P.L. West in the United States to innovate in using different silver alloys and a wide variety of headjoint styles, and together they developed the Miyazawa Improved Scale. In 2005, Miyazawa introduced the Brogger System, designed by Danish Flute-maker Johan Brogger. All Miyazawa flutes feature a pinless left hand mechanism and the Brogger System for more stable adjustments and the elimination of binding from traditional pinned mechanisms. Keys are Cold-Forged, which are much stronger and more reliable than keys created through outdated heat-casting methods which compromise metal integrity. Flat-bottom key cups provide a superior, consistent surface where pads are seated. Miyazawa flutes are designed specifically for Straubinger Pads. Not all flute mechanisms have the precision to benefit from these advanced pads. Play a Miyazawa and feel the freedom to communicate your natural musical voice. Miyazawa is more than a flute, it's a community. You'll find Miyazawa flutists wherever you play - throughout the world and close to home.

Miyazawa Flutes currently offers four headjoint styles: The "MZ-10," the "MZ-11," the "MX-1," and the "MX-2."

The MZ-10 allows the player to put a large volume of air through the flute, achieving a rich and powerful sound. Characterized by plenty of lower partials anchoring the sound with a full harmonic spectrum.  Flexible and responsive with a wide range of tonal and color possibilities.

The MZ-11 is a more traditional style-sound in a modern headjoint design.  Characterized by an open, dark and fluid sound with fewer high harmonics. Comfortable resistance with easily controlled dynamics and a round, warm response.

The MX-1 is characterized by a centered, focused sound that is easy to control. The dark harmonics result in a dense penetration that is consistent throughout all registers. With an ample amount of resistance, this style provides a solid foundation for articulation.

The MX-2 has an open sound with a tonal complexity that allows for great freedom of expression. Full-bodied and responsive, while articulation is crisp and clean. Able to accommodate a high volume of air, this powerful style provides expansive projection with great stability.

New Muramatsu Flutes

The Muramatsu story is one of an artist who became enamored when he heard a Boehm system flute for the first time. This sound was new to Japan, and inspired the young Koichi Muramatsu to create such flutes himself in 1923. He didn't realize at the time the legacy he would be creating: he was to become the founder of modern day flute making in Japan. In 1962 Koichi Muramatsu passed his legacy onto his son, Osamu Muramatsu, who carried Muramatsu flutes into the twenty-first century. Today Muramatsu is still family owned and is led by Koichi Muramatsu's grandson, Akio Muramatsu. Muramatsu produces more professional flutes than any other maker in the world. They are sold on every continent. Family traditions continue in the Muramatsu company, which warmly greets traveling flutists to Japan and maintains friendly relationships with flutists worldwide.

New Powell Flutes

Verne Q. Powell opened his shop at 295 Huntington Ave in Boston, Massachusetts – just down the street from the famous Boston Symphony Hall.  The first 10 flutes made by Mr. Powell were owned by some of the most famous American flutists of the time, including William Kincaid, Arthur Lora and John Wummer. By 1930 Powell flutes were part of major orchestras in Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, New York and Philadelphia. From the first Powell flute, made from melting down 7 silver teaspoons and 3 silver watch cases in 1906, to today's Powell Custom flutes, the humanity of each artisan at Powell is reflected in the character of the instrument. The feel of a key or the aesthetic of a pointed arm are the subtle but telltale signs of the individuality of the flute-maker. In the final analysis it is the musician who determines the true voice of the flute. The unique quality and excellence of a Powell instrument resides in its ability to be shaped by the flutist. Each Powell flute has a unique character, yet they all bear a striking family resemblance. Ultimately, a Powell flute or piccolo is crafted to the highest musical performance standard.

Powell's Handmade Custom flutes have been the "gold standard" of the flute world for more than eight decades. They have been celebrated for their flexibility of color, ease of response, and reliability; this is why instruments made in the 1920s are still being played today in some of the world's greatest orchestras. Every Custom flute continues this tradition and is handmade to exacting specifications by Powell's skilled artisans in Maynard, Massachusetts. Every instrument is a highly functional tool as well as a stunning work of art. The choice is yours.

Powell Flutes currently offers four different headjoint styles: The "Philharmonic Cut," the "Soloist Cut," the "Venti Cut," and the "Lumina Cut."

The Philharmonic Cut has a relatively broad, flat lip plate. Articulation is crisp and clean, and the style produces a deep, rich tone with a broad dynamic range.

The strength and flexibility of the Soloist Cut headjoint allows the player to fill a hall or perform the quietest passages easily, with complete command. The slightly curved lip plate offers quick articulation and a full range of colors.

The Venti Cut, developed by Mr. Paul Edmund-Davies to mirror his experience of singing in a cathedral choir, has excellent depth of sound through all three octaves, and a very resonant and free third octave.

The Lumina Cut, the newest member of the Powell headjoint family, offers players a less resistant but still very colorful headjoint option. This headjoint has quickly become the most popular of Powell's headjoints because of its powerful, dark sound.

New Sankyo Flutes

An obsession with sound is the driving force behind Sankyo. Founded by three men from humble beginnings, Kikuo Hisakura, Hideo Takei and Taichi Oki relentlessly pursued their vision of building handmade flutes not as simply a manufacturing process or science, but elevating flute-making to an art. They wanted to capture a sound that inspires and fulfills. When Hisakura, Takei and Oki formed their own company in 1968, they were motivated by their passion to express their technical expertise and more importantly, their artistry. They invested in their shared dream and built the first Sankyo flutes in a garage. Kikuo Hisakura’s prior career managing another flute company’s production had established his reputation as a “genius” of flute-making. He designed almost all of the Sankyo mechanical systems, scale and headjoints as well as many specialized tools and equipment. Kikuo Hisakura was a visionary from the beginning through his passing in 2009. Yutaka Hisakura, Kikuo's son, started to learn about craftsmanship from his father when he was a young boy, and he is now the current President of Sankyo. While his official role is to manage the company, he can still often be found in the production section doing what he enjoys most: building flutes. Hideo Takei managed the company in the beginning and contributed greatly to the finishing aspects of manufacturing, such as pad design development and expertise in padding technique. Although he is now long retired, Mr. Takei still visits the factory almost every day. Taichi Oki went on to establish his own company specializing in the polishing of small parts.

Trevor James instruments are a world renowned name, the result of 30 years of teacher discussions, player testing, performance workshops, and quality research and design.  Only one measure is important when the instruments leave the workshops – the complete satisfaction of the musician! Their directive is to simply listen, ponder, sketch, design and create a Trevor James instrument that lets the player reach their true potential.  There really is nothing like finding the instrument that feels right.  The instrument that opens up new sounds, colors, and textures is special! Trevor James actively embraces all forms of social media, valuing a deep and ongoing dialogue with players and teachers wherever they live. Despite their worldwide success, each Trevor James flute retains its individuality by their unique 5-year guarantee. Their UK-based technical workshop and R&D teams are composed entirely of musicians and experienced specialists. Buying a musical instrument is very much personal choice and should be based around a connection when performing.  Trevor James passionately believes that musicians continue to choose their instruments in the knowledge that it will enable their own ‘aspirations’ to be reached, and ultimately, makes their lives ‘Sound Beautiful.’

New Yamaha Flutes

Yamaha Flutes represent the perfect combination of artistic excellence and technical perfection. Yamaha began building instruments in 1887, and the Yamaha tradition of producing premium quality instruments with outstanding value continues in the latest update to the Yamaha lineup of handmade flutes. Yamaha flute designers began by re-examining every feature of a handmade flute, focusing on updating all design specifications, no matter if it be fundamental or ornate, substantial or minute. Following in the long tradition of old-world, hand-crafted flutes, Yamaha introduces the most advanced, precise and detailed 21st century technologies. The new Yamaha professional flutes have been reinvented to meet the needs of the high school, college and professional level flutist! Through vertical integration, many of the most advanced features of the new artist-inspired Handmade flutes have been applied to the new Yamaha 500, 600, and 700 series professional flutes. All professional flutes are heat treated through an annealing process that allows the instrument to vibrate more freely, providing optimal response and beautiful resonance. The new hand-finished sterling silver headjoint features a specially designed lip plate that is modeled after that of the hand cut Type A headjoint. Additionally, the 600 and 700 series flutes feature Straubinger Phoenix pads and a .43mm wall thickness.

Student and Beginner Flutes

We carry a comprehensive set of beginner flutes, and this list curates our absolute favorites! These are all plateau-model flutes, meaning they are closed-hole, C footjoint flutes - no bells or whistles. These are meant to be for absolute beginners, or players up to a year or two of experience (especially small children).

The first three models below represent our recommendation for small children (usually 8 years or younger), and they will include both a curved headjoint to begin learning on, and a straight headjoint, for when the child grows into the full-size flute.

The other six models are our suggestions for the perfect student flute for larger children and/or adults.

Vintage Flutes

The Flute Center classifies flutes made by European makers including Louis Lot, Boehm And Mendler, Rive, Bonneville, and Carte (among others) as "vintage." We also consider Powell flutes and piccolos made before Verne Q. Powell retired to be vintage, as well as Haynes flutes and piccolos with serial numbers lower than #36000, which encompasses the “Golden Age” of Haynes.

What's special about vintage flutes?

Playing older flutes is like stepping back in time. Antique flutes offer a sweetness and purity of sound not often found in modern flutes. The approach to playing these special flutes is intrinsically different than the way one blows into a modern flute; they have more resistance and smaller embouchure holes. The happy result is the glorious tonal colors found in these flutes, hence the intense interest in these by those who have discovered the "secret".
